Renowned international human rights activist Muheed Jeeran met with former Minister of Defence and National Security of the Republic of Maldives, Ameen Faisal, to discuss current affairs in the country.
The focus of the meeting was on the ongoing youth protest seeking justice for Yumna, as well as the lack of justice for the bomb attack on President Nasheed four years ago.
Ameen Faisal, who also served as the National Security Advisor of Maldives, is the grandson of the first president of Maldives, Mohamed Amin Didi. The meeting was described as productive and significant in addressing important issues facing the nation.
Today marks the fourth anniversary of the assassination attempt on former President Mohamed Nasheed, his party the Democrats have called for an expedited investigation and swift delivery of justice. Despite Minister of Defence Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon stating last year that new information had been received regarding the attack, no further actions have been taken by State institutions.
The Democrats expressed concerns that the gravity of the incident, which was a premeditated terrorist attack, has been downplayed. They emphasized that terrorism is the most serious crime, with special legal procedures to follow in such cases.
The inquiry report revealed that there were three prior assassination attempts against Nasheed before the May 6 attack. The Democrats highlighted that the attack occurred while Nasheed was entitled to full security detail as Speaker of Parliament at the time.
Only one individual, Ahmed Adhuham, who confessed to actively participating in the bomb attack, has been convicted. However, the mastermind behind the attack remains unknown.
Currently, trials of other accused individuals are ongoing at the Criminal Court. A schedule of hearings has been set to conclude by August 31, as reported by Judge Sofwath Habeeb in a hearing on April 19 last year.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu pledged a fair investigation into the attack on Nasheed, emphasizing the need for justice that the previous administration failed to provide.
Nasheed, who suffered serious injuries in the attack and underwent a major surgery, continues to push for accountability in the case. Those charged in connection to the attack include Adhuham, Mujaz Ahmed, Ma. Feyruge, Thahmeen Mohamed, Folheymaa, GA. Kon’dey, Ali Haisham, Nooreege, N. Manadhoo, Fahmy Ali, Hudhuruvaage, GA. Vilin’gili, Ishaq, M. Kudhehige, and Mohamed Nazim, Asareege, AA. Maalhos.
